As the premier manufacturer of injection mould plastic parts for medical, water management, electronics and defence markets, the factory at A K Industries has a high energy bill, consuming 1.3MWh of electricity annually.

In 2022, not only was there a lot of volatility in the energy market but material costs also increased dramatically. To stabilise business costs as much as possible, A K Industries decided to investigate what savings were achievable from installing a solar system.

Sam Green, Managing Director at the company, sought the advice of Solarkinetics to specify a solar system with the solar panels fitted to the factory’s roof and determine the resulting pay-back time.

With a pay-back forecast to be just 2 and a half years, it was easy to justify installing a solar system that will be producing power for many decades. In fact, the solar panels came with a 25 year warranty on workmanship, defects and linear performance output

In 2023, a solar installation of 1280 x 375Wp REC Twin Peak 4 were installed along with three inverters: 2 x Solaredge 100kW Synergy Manager and 1 x Solaredge 50kW Synergy Manager.

“A K Industries is a family business as is Solarkinetics and this was a huge attraction,” said Sam.  “In business I find that the fundamental foundation for an effective working relationship is trust and confidence with those you work with – this I found with Gordon and Jaine, owners of Solarkinetics. Their customer focused approach was just what we wanted.”

The District Network Operator (DNO) limited export to 11kWh so at the weekend when the factory is closed not all the power generated is exported. Even so, the solar system is forecast to save £95K in 2023.

“Despite the solar system being large and taking three weeks to install, the team did an excellent job, without causing disruption to the business.

For A K Industries, the main driver was combating rising electricity costs, with the added benefit of supporting our sustainability targets,” added Sam.

Clear Storage is the largest single site for storage using containers with 780 containers on the 9 acre site in Skylon Park, Hereford Enterprise Zone. This family business is committed to sustainability so when an opportunity to gain a Business Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP) grant covering 70% of the cost of installing a solar PV system, they jumped at the chance to further reduce their carbon footprint.

Solarkinetics came recommended to Ali Goodman, Managing Director at Clear Storage. “Gordon Yule visited on-site and explained to us what was important to the business – the energy savings and pay-back time we can expect with the PV system,” said Ali.

The predicted annual output of 9371kWh powers the electrically operated access gates plus 50 containers with any deficit coming from the grid. Each container has a dehumidifier, light and socket with Kingspan insulation and polished wooden floors to keep the inside free of condensation.

30 x 370W REC Twin Peak 4 panels were mounted on the top of containers nearest the gate, the mounts facing south and ballasted. Two Sunny Boy 5000W inverters plus a Sunny Home Manager were located nearby provided intelligent energy management.

“Installation was quick and efficient, it seemed that no sooner the guys were here, they were finished,” continued Ali.

As testament to their sustainability credentials, Clear Storage are certified Carbon Neutral by One Carbon World and have planted more than 3 miles of native hedgerows around the site, free from annual cutting to support wildlife. The Goodman family who own and run Clear Storage are also nearby farmers, passionate about the environment around them.

Steadily increasing electricity prices in the first half of 2022 were a wake up call to consider reviewing the way electricity was being used in the home, the use of more energy efficient appliances and ultimately the generation of power. It was the installation of solar panels on a neighbour’s property that was the catalyst for considering a solar installation, especially after realising that a Southwest facing roof would be appropriate.

“After some initial research into solar energy systems I decided to approach a number of installers to get quotations for a suitable domestic installation and Solarkinetics was subsequently chosen,” commented our client. “I felt that the personnel from Solarkinetics were professional, knowledgeable and helpful in designing an installation that was wholly adequate for the property using quality equipment. Whilst not essential it was good to know that the REC solar panels were not made in China!”

The installation mainly comprised 16 x 405W REC Twinpeak black solar panels, a SolarEdge 5Kw inverter and a SolarEdge Energy Bank 10kW battery.

“Scaffolding was required to ensure the panels could be installed on the southwest facing slate roof. Installation was completed with the least amount of disruption; the necessary cabling being installed to be as unobtrusive as possible.”

“All the calculations indicated a significantly better return by way of reduced electricity costs compared to a fixed investment return from a Building Society. Whilst the initial installer’s calculations indicated a payback in 11 years this was based on a very modest rate for export of surplus energy to the Grid. On the basis of current actual rates offered by Octopus Energy payback is expected to be sooner.”

Our clients approached us after having been let down by another contractor who had promised to complete the work by a definite date and had been unable to do so; it left us with a challenge to meet this deadline. It was mid-December, so potential weather issues and short daylight meant the race was on.

The house is a new build project and the clients were very keen to take advantage of the fact that the roof was not yet completed to look at all types of array to get the best yield of course, but also to have a roof that is aesthetically pleasing.

We advised using black panels which matched the proposed roof covering of traditional slates particularly well and to set them in an integrated mounting system from GSE, so they sit flush with the rest of the roof. (This type of system can be retro-fitted on existing roofs, but works particularly well with new build or renovation projects)

Thanks to the ability of our regular suppliers, Wind & Sun, we were able to order and collect the components for the system at short notice and whilst the preparations were underway for the outside work we were able to arrange for the EPC and feed in tariff paperwork to be ready for submission as soon as the system was commissioned in late December.

Now as our clients approach their first winter in their new home, they can be sure that they are running their household in a way that is having a low environmental impact and keeping running costs down.

For many years Garway has had a well-loved village hall, used year-round for community events. It was built in the 1930’s and demands on its facilities led a forward thinking village hall committee to plan for the future. A new Passivhaus standard building, designed by architects Simmonds Mills, is the first community centre of this kind in Herefordshire. Passivhaus is based on proven robust, high performance, low environmental impact construction methods, lighting, heating and ventilation systems and materials. The objective is to construct a comfortable building with minimal running costs.

Solarkinetics was approached at the start of the project to design a solar pv plan for the roof which was delivered in two stages, with the roof panels fitted in October 2017, then internal electrical works and commissioning in the Spring of 2018. Because the building was built using grants from public funding it is not eligible for the feed-in tariff.  Even so, the hall should save over £1,000 every year on electricity running costs.

The new building was built with assistance from the Big Lottery Fund, the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, the Post Code Lottery and Awards for All. We were delighted to attend the official opening on April 7th 2018 when the ribbon was cut by the High Sheriff of Herefordshire, The Reverend Lady Lisvane. On a grey, chilly day the assembled folk enjoyed tea, cake and local cider and beers in a beautiful light and airy space, one which will serve their community for many years to come, without costing the earth to run.
